What size dumpster do you need for your cleanout or renovation project?

Choosing the right-size dumpster depends on three factors: the amount of stuff you have, the type of junk or debris, and the size and weight of the items you’re disposing of. All of your stuff must fit inside of the dumpster without spilling over the top and be within a designated weight limit.
When you contact Bin There Dump That for your Atlanta dumpster rental, our Dumpster Consultants will walk you through the rental process, so that you can decide with confidence whether you need a 10, 15, or 20-yard dumpster for your project.

Dumpster Sizes Explained

Dumpster sizes are named for their cubic volume, or how much debris fits inside. For example, a 15-yard dumpster is large enough to contain 15 cubic yards of waste. Another way to think about dumpster sizing is a comparison to a standard pickup truck bed. A standard F150 pick up truck filled level is shy of 1 cubic yard (27 cubic feet). With that being said a 20 cubic yard dumpster holds approximately 10 level pickup truck loads. The total weight of the dumpster depends on the material types. For example, if you were to fill a 20 cubic yard bin with soil you would have over 15 tons of weight, but if you were to fill that same bin with feathers you probably would even hit ½ ton! Dumpster rental companies have a set amount of weight they will cover for each dumpster.

However, while any company’s 10, 15, or 20-yard dumpster will theoretically hold the same amount of waste, the dumpster dimensions may vary. Dimensions matter for two reasons:
> Will your stuff fit into the dumpster?
> Will the dumpster fit into your driveway/space?

For example, if you’re cleaning out your basement, you may have a few (or a lot) of bulky items such as furniture that you’re getting rid of. While a 10-yard dumpster may seem appropriate for a small cleanout, your sectional might be too long to fit inside of a 10x7x4 foot dumpster.

Compare this to replacing the flooring in your home. The construction debris may fit more compactly, allowing you to opt for the smaller dumpster and organize while you load.

Dumpster dimensions also matter when it comes to delivering and placing your dumpster. A large, 20-yard dumpster may have equally large dimensions, making it more difficult to place in or around your driveway. Such a large dumpster might also be more difficult to deliver, especially if there are odd angles to the roads and pathways that lead to your home.

Bin There Dump That dumpsters are perfect for your small dumpster rental needs. Our compact, residential-friendly dumpsters are designed to fit Atlanta neighborhoods and driveways. Each of our 3 conveniently sized dumpsters takes up less footprint space than a minivan. If you have a 2-car garage, you will be able to store our largest 20-yard dumpster and still park your car next to it.

One of the keys to our compact design is increasing the height: our largest dumpster is only slightly longer and wider than our smallest, but it is 2 feet taller. All Bin There Dump That dumpsters have double doors for easy walk-in loading, which means that you won’t have to lift anything over the side of the dumpster and allows you to maximize your space through organization

Keeping the dumpster footprint small, also allows us to use smaller trucks to deliver and haul away, so we can place one of our dumpsters just about anywhere on your property or project site.

Loading & Weight Restrictions

Safety regulations require that dumpsters have a level load to be transported. This means that dimensions matter, especially when it comes to larger items. (You can’t stand that sofa on end to make it fit into a smaller dumpster if the sofa extends over the rim.)

Weight also matters for safe haul-away. Sheetrock and flooring materials may lay flat, but the debris from a full renovation can be quite heavy, and therefore may require a larger dumpster to accommodate the weight.

It’s also important to pay attention to the tonnage referred to in your contract. Some companies don’t include tonnage in the initial quote but charge for it later. Other companies may include tonnage in your pricing but round-up for even a few pounds over your contracted limit. Imagine paying for an extra 2,000 pounds of waste because of a 20-pound coffee table.

At Bin There Dump That, we pride ourselves on our straightforward pricing with no hidden fees. We are upfront about tonnage and prorate any overage.

Do you need a locking lid for your dumpster?

Locking lids are options for our 15-yard and 20-yard dumpsters. If your rental spans more than a couple of days (our standard dumpster rental is for one week), your property is easily accessible to a main road, or you are otherwise worried about others adding their own junk to your open dumpster, we recommend renting a 15-yard or 20-yard dumpster with a locking lid.
